Earn Code Council 2010 Raising the Profile Award

A public campaign highlighting the importance of building codes and building safety is the 2010 recipient of an International Code Council award. The Raising the Profile Award recognizes contributions that raise public awareness of accomplishments of code enforcement officials that improve public safety.
The “Better Building. Safer Homes.” campaign was developed by the Virginia Building and Code Officials Association Region II (VBCOA) and the New River Valley Home Builders Association (NRVHBA). This is the first time a partnership between two organizations has received the award.
“This is a great example of how the public can benefit from a government and private sector partnership that brought together code enforcement officials and home builders to the benefit of the public and public safety in the New River Valley,” said Code Council CEO Rick Weiland.
The initiative promotes better construction practices and safer homes, and built a partnership with citizens, building professionals and local government to ensure that homes are built as safe as possible.
“The mission of the “Better Building. Safer Homes.” Campaign is to promote better construction practices and safer homes for all those who live in the New River Valley,” said VBCOA Region II Chair Cathy Cook. “Our goal is to work together with citizens, contractors, and local government to ensure that our buildings and communities are as safe as possible. In a nutshell, we’re promoting better building and safer homes.”
“By partnering together, our two organizations can fill in the gaps for anyone who is building, remodeling or in the beginning stages of planning,” Chris Pfohl, NRVHBA President said. “Together, we’re building homes that are safe, healthy and will grow in value.”
The International Code Council, a membership association dedicated to building safety, fire prevention and energy efficiency, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states choose the International Codes, building safety codes developed by the International Code Council. The International Codes also serve as the basis for construction of federal properties around the world, and as a reference for many nations outside the United States.

We are pleased to announce that our 2010 Budget, as adopted by the Board on
December 11, includes two new benefits targeted to our Chapters. They are a new
Code Hearings Scholarship and a new Chapter Education Benefit.
Code
Hearings Scholarship
This new program will provide matching funds through the ICC Foundation to
assist with the cost of code hearing attendance for persons nominated by their
chapter. The Foundation dollars must be matched by Chapter dollars to access the
scholarship grant. More details on the program will be developed and published
in the coming weeks.
Chapter Education Benefit
We know it has been a difficult year with the suspension of classroom-style
training as a Chapter Education Benefit. Our financial situation has stabilized
to the point where we can re-introduce a Chapter Education Benefit that will
provide an affordable option for you, a sustainable option for the ICC that can
withstand further economic bumps, and an opportunity for you to continue to use
your benefit as a mechanism to build participation and raise funds for chapter
activities.
For 2010, the Chapter Training Benefit will consist of one day of training at 50
percent off the listed price for courses and workbooks. As an example, the
average flat rate for a one-day seminar is $2,400 with workbooks ranging from
$25 to $50. For the Chapter Training Benefit, the same course would cost the
chapter $1200 as a flat fee, plus $12.50 to $25 for workbooks depending on the
course.
“One Day of Training” means a day-long seminar
An exception will be made for courses already designed to run a half day, such
as the Update courses.
If a chapter wishes to customize their one day with two or more courses that are
normally each a day long, the additional workbooks beyond the first course will
not be discounted.
“Bundled” Training Benefit Days from Multiple Chapters
Each chapter in good standing is entitled to the Benefit. The total number of
days will be discounted by 50% percent for each chapter making a contribution.
Further discounts will be given if the same instructor is used over multiple
days.
Days beyond the first day will receive an additional 20 percent off the list
price.
Certain courses will be exempt due to high outside costs, which reduce the
overall ICC profit margin. Examples include Electrical training and Legal
training.
Certain workbooks will be exempt or substituted due to their high value.
Examples include Significant Changes publications.
You may contact our Training Client Services team to begin scheduling your
Education Benefit Days for 2010. If you are uncertain as to whom your client
representative is, please contact Annie Martinez, Manager of Client Services, at
amartinez@iccsafe.org and she will be happy to assist you.
Thank you for your ongoing support and good work in helping build a safer world.
Sincerely,
Ron Lynn
